Do you remember what you were doing at 08:30am on Thursday 15th August 2012? I certainly do – I had just received the best text message from UCAS telling me my place had been secured at Manchester Metropolitan University to study Advertising and Brand Management. I was over the moon and my hard work in my recent A Level exams had paid off. I was ready to head up north and complete my four year sandwich course degree.
From the very start of my degree I was determined to seek a relevant work placement opportunity to get industry exposure and some practical experience to build on my studies. I was fortunate enough to secure a one year paid internship at Kapler Communications , which is now drawing to a close – and what an eye opener it has been!
Kapler Communications is an established marketing communications agency specialising in working with companies in the science, engineering, technology and healthcare markets. Throughout my time at Kapler I have learnt a great deal through being immediately thrust into client work, including attending client meetings, writing press releases and conducting media outreach as well as being responsible for social media platforms (as well as organising the Christmas party!)
My role has been varied and exciting as I have developed my skills dealing directly with clients and their ever-changing challenges. I have come to realise how important it is to work as united team making the most of everyone’s unique skills in order to achieve success for our clients.
My year at Kapler has also underlined to me the critical necessity of carefully selecting where your internship would be best provided. Kapler Communications is part of a group of companies, The Scott Partnership, which has a great reputation for investing in interns like me and our future. With my own dedicated line manager, I feel I have the support and guidance from the rest of the team to help me achieve my best.
I can’t wait to tackle my final year at MMU – bring on the dissertation! However, I won’t be gone for long as I’ve been lucky enough to be able to secure a part time role at Kapler Communications during my final degree year and am looking forward to being welcomed back to progress my career with the company as a graduate.
As I start to pack up my belongings and make my way back up to Manchester, there is now a new opportunity for someone to join the Kapler team and follow in my footsteps as a PR Intern. My words of wisdom for anyone interested in succeeding in this role are – always put 110% into all tasks, always do your best and always let your passion for science show!
